Smooth or fine-grain rubber tiles: which should you choose?
When comparing smooth and fine-grain rubber tiles, start with the finish and thicknesses available. Both BULLMAN products use SBR rubber in a 100 × 100 cm format. The fine-grain range includes a 25 mm option; the smooth range has a black finish with white flecks in 15 or 20 mm.
Both finishes are suitable for weight drops. This comparison helps you choose the appearance and thickness for your installation.
Differences between the two BULLMAN products
| Criterion | Fine-grain tiles | Smooth tiles |
|---|---|---|
| Nominal size | 100 × 100 cm | 100 × 100 cm |
| Nominal area per tile | 1 m² | 1 m² |
| Stated material | SBR rubber | SBR rubber |
| Stated density | 1 050 kg/m³ | 1 050 kg/m³ |
| Available thicknesses | 15, 20 and 25 mm | 15 and 20 mm |
| Stated appearance | Black fine grain | Smooth, black with white flecks |
| Edges | Bevelled | Bevelled |
The fine-grain tiles and smooth tiles each have their own product page and variant selector. Compare surface photos at a similar scale, then wider views: a single tile and a complete gym floor give different impressions.
Choose the finish for your gym’s appearance
Black fine grain and black with white flecks give the floor different looks. Consider how they work with your machines, wall colours and lighting. In a coaching studio or home gym, appearance can matter as much as equipment layout.
For a large area, ask to review the available images of the selected product. A photograph cannot accurately convey texture or every lighting condition.
“Smooth” refers here to the commercial finish. It does not establish a specific grip performance in dry or wet conditions. Likewise, “fine-grain” alone does not prove better wear resistance: such differences require comparable data.
Choose thickness independently of appearance
If your project calls for a 25 mm tile, that option is available in the fine-grain range. For 15 and 20 mm, compare both products and include the finish in your choice.
All BULLMAN rubber tiles are suitable for weight drops. The choice of thickness and installation depends on the environment: the type and condition of the subfloor, the area covered, loads, drop height and frequency, and noise or neighbouring-space constraints. BULLMAN also offers underlays for tiles that are particularly effective at improving cushioning during drops. Available on quotation, they are selected for your subfloor, floor area and environment. Plan everyday cleaning
Ease of maintenance depends on the dirt in your gym and the cleaning equipment available. Dust, particles brought in from outside and training residues require a regular routine, whatever the finish.
Plan vacuuming, access beneath storage and drying time after damp cleaning. For large areas, check that cleaning equipment is compatible with the flooring. No comparative measurements here establish a shorter cleaning time for either product.
The installation and maintenance guide sets out preparation steps and the points to confirm in the delivered batch instructions.
Compare costs on the same basis
To compare both ranges, use the same thickness and quantity. A 100 × 100 cm tile corresponds to a nominal 1 m², so the unit price is also the price for that nominal area, before cuts and other project costs.
For a clear 4 × 5 m area, a layout of twenty whole tiles gives a simple comparison basis. Add transport, subfloor preparation and any transitions. Check prices, availability and commercial terms on the product pages when making your selection.
Reaction-to-fire classification: what to check
Flooring reaction-to-fire classification is determined under NF EN 13501-1. For premises open to the public in France, check the classification required for the room and the documentation for the exact product, taking its thickness, subfloor and installation conditions into account.
Frequently asked questions
Are the smooth tiles made of EPDM?
The BULLMAN smooth tile product page specifies SBR rubber. A flecked appearance does not establish an EPDM composition or an unspecified material percentage.
Does either finish provide better sound insulation?
No acoustic comparison between these products is provided here. Results also depend on thickness, subfloor, impacts and the building. Define the project’s acoustic requirements before selecting the flooring.
Can they be used in neighbouring areas?
Assess this in your gym layout. Check actual floor levels, joints and how the tiles are held in place. Provide a suitable transition where thicknesses differ.
How do I choose if both products suit my project?
Compare appearance, ordering conditions and your maintenance routine. Request any further technical information needed, then choose the finish that suits your space.
